Review: Bleedover by Curtis Hox

When I started reading this I wasn’t quite sure where it was going, we see Dr Harriet Sterling claiming that the New Phenomenon of Bleedover is all around us, books, TV, films - all being mysteriously altered. If I’m honest I struggled at first to get my head round the technicality of bleedover but once I’d got it I was intrigued to find out more.

I enjoyed the way the book was split into three different sections, each section building the background story for our final confrontation. I found that each detail of the background was important to understand the reasoning behind the obvious frictions between Hattie and Corbin - almost a lifelong battle had been between them. As well as detailing the background we also found out about each of the scenarios that had happened in the few weeks leading up to the final confrontation.

Part One - The Apple we see Alice (Hattie’s best student) stumble across the success of incanting by Towns’ earlier in the day, and then repeated again in front of Alice, Hattie and Masumi. This is the beginning of the end, if it wasn’t for this success then the final showdown would of waited a little bit longer!

Part Two - The Portal was a really good section, I was trying to read the book quicker so I could find out what was behind that door, and when we found out thought it was amazing!

Part Three - The Symposium was quite tense to say the least, I had a vague idea by then what would be happening at the end - just not sure how it was going to end and in whose favour! I thought that these final scenes were brilliantly written and at last had the pace that I missed throughout the rest of the book.

I enjoyed reading about each of the characters as it was nice for the book to focus on them all rather than just our two main characters Hattie and Corbin. We see that Alice is faithful and loyal throughout, we see Masumi in turmoil over her beliefs and we see Towns’ pushed to the limits.

All in all I enjoyed the book, a little technical in places but I suppose that’s to be expected with the Sci-Fi Fantasy genre. I found the storyline itself very intriguing and it definitely got me thinking.

Best Books of the Year 2011 (And Giveaway)

I thought I'd like to share my two most favourite books of the year with you, I have read lots and lots of wonderful books this year but my favourite two have to be:

My Name is Death by Alan Cass - this is a fast paced supernatural thriller with a twist - i loved reading every word of this book, it was well written and I really enjoyed Alan's unique writing style - check out my full review Here

Dead Game by Claire Kinton - this book was truely breathtaking, a unique storyline by a wonderful author. It really makes you think about what else may be out there, and realising that Hope is always with you. Read my full review Here

Review: Dead Game by Claire Kinton

I didn’t think it was possible to love a book this much!! Well worth every penny

Ok, so when I opened this book to start reading it I had no idea what it was about, I’d seen Claire tweeting about it and told her I’d buy a copy which I did, when it arrived I didnt even read the blurb, so two nights ago I settled down to make a start reading it – after the Author’s Note I found myself intrigued, The first chapter got straight into the story – it started off how I’d imagined it would however by the end of the chapter I was as confused as Archie!!

The novel then continues flowing perfectly between current day and Archie’s past, I found I needed to read more and more as I wanted to know what had happened and what was happening, I found the characters were very easy to like and found myself easily immersed inbetween them, it was as if I was actually there alongside them all. I could barely put the book down, the time seemed to just fly when I was reading it, it was like I was lost in with them.

The book is the perfect mix of things that we can relate to and this mythical world where nothing is quite as it seems – the only way I can think of to describe it at the moment is – an adults fairytale. However upon saying that -  in most ‘fairytales’ the story and characters aren’t very believeable – however I found all aspects of this story believeable and not only that but it really did intrigue me as I was reading it I found myself wondering what else there was out there and in fact I still am even after I’ve finished it.

Dead Game is beautifully written and is a unique story it is a very positive book, and draws on the positives even when the situation or topic isn’t, alot of that comes from the author herself though I think, It really is a fantastic read and I’m very excited as I don’t have long to wait until the sequel is out as ‘Waiting Game’ is coming this year – I already have an inkling what it’s about – I’ll have to wait and see whether I’m right or not!!

Dead Game is a MUST read for everyone – even if Fantasy isn’t normally your preferred genre I would definately give this book a try – it reaches out to your soul and pulls at your heartstrings and reassures you that Hope is always with you
